"Launched in late 2013, ESA's Gaia mission has now begun it's 5-year mission to provide unprecedented astrometric measurements of 1 billion stars in the Milky Way. High resolution spectroscopy of carefully targeted samples of ~1% of these stars adds a critical final piece of information to allow us to complete a full dynamical picture of the structure and evolution of the Galaxy. In this talk I will describe the technology behind these measurements from both the ground and space"
