"NASA's most recent X-51A 'waverider' test in August 2012 marked the latest in a long line of unsuccessful attempts at sustained hypersonic flight. Despite considerable interest and investment from commercial and military sources, the prospect of flying at five or more times the speed of sound remains an elusive goal. Since Concorde's last flight in 2003, supersonic air travel has become a thing of the past."
