Details:
"The Settle & Carlisle Railway was built by the Midland Railway as an alternative to the London & North Western Railway route to Scotland. It was opened to passenger trains in 1876 and continued to be well used for passenger and freight until the 1960s and 1970s. Due to the huge repair bill needed to keep the line operating, it was scheduled for closure in 1988 but in 1989 the decision was overturned and with the repairs carried out, it is back running successfully today."
