"Genetic engineering of DNA has been possible for nearly 50 years. After initial development in bacteria it was quickly applied to animals, plants and viruses. The technology has developed and diversified over the decades, becoming quicker, easier, more capable and cheaper. The outcomes of all this permeate our lives, in particular through applications of biomedical science. The ability to alter the genome of organisms, in some cases at will, has undoubted benefits."
