About this event:
An online talk on the subject of time, with two speakers bringing different perspectives, one from the UK and one from the USA.
Why attend this event:
Time is of critical importance to many sectors, including every aspect of media. DAB distribution uses GPS to keep the transmitters synchronised as a single frequency network across the UK. Media Streaming relies on time-stamps to manage access rights and deliver the packets in the correct order. Media can also be used to distribute time references. This ecosystem is evolving rapidly in response to technology developments and to threats such as the jamming of GPS. The two speakers will explain the various ways in which time is used across multiple sectors, with a focus on media. There will also be discussion of the ways in which broadcast can itself distribute an accurate time reference. Serving a wide and varied audience, the talk will have international appeal and not just to the media sector. Skills, Learning and Networks. The audience for the talk will learn about aspects of time distribution which are outside their experience or geographic area. Thought Leadership and Policy. The ability of broadcast networks to serve as a time reference distribution system is not currently embraced within government policy. To educate a broad community on the importance of accurate, resilient time distribution and the opportunities broadcast media presents to contribute to this. Key Audience Anyone with an interest in time reference distribution, chiefly but not only the media, transport and finance sectors.
