Telecoms: Past, Present and Future

The lecture will take us on a tour through the evolution of telecommunications, from crackly analogue lines to modern SD WAN. We will explore telecoms as the electronic transmission of voice, data, IP, and video over distance via cable, radio, or satellite - forming the global network that underpins communication and internet access today.

Redundant Electromechanical Actuators for Aerospace: Design Principles and Equalisation Strategies

The rapid move toward all electric and autonomous aerospace systems has increased the demand for actuation technologies capable of delivering safe and reliable performance under fault conditions, sensor drift, and mechanical mismatch. This webinar provides a detailed and practical overview of redundant electromechanical actuators (EMAs) used in aerospace flight control applications, highlighting their relevance to modern robotics and advanced mechatronic systems.

Hydrogen for long-haul road freight - a realist retroductive assessment

This lecture presents a study which focuses on arguably the most contentious energy supply choice for decarbonizing general-purpose long-haul road freight: hydrogen. Ten requirements for an energy supply choice to be feasible are identified. It is concluded that it is very unlikely that hydrogen will become feasible in the lifespan of a truck bought today. This means it can be disregarded as a current vehicle purchase consideration, as hydrogen vehicles will not undermine the competitiveness or resale value of a vehicle using a different energy source bought today. There are two principal innovations in the study approach: the consideration of socio-technical and political as well as techno-economic factors; and the application of realist retroductive assessment."
