Technical Visit to Towngas Hall of Innovation & Hall of Future Energy

A highlight of the visit is the next-generation smart gas meter, equipped with an embedded microcontroller and sensor array that intelligently detects leakage scenarios and automatically shuts off the gas supply under three critical conditions: a continuous ultra-low flow over 24 hours (typically indicating a pinhole leak), a sudden surge in flow (indicating a dislodged gas pipe), or an extended period without scheduled on-site inspection ensuring uncompromising safety for every household.

Bridging Space and Earth: Governance, Spectrum, and Validation Challenges in NTN and Satcom on the Move

The convergence of Non- Terrestrial Networks (NTN) and Satcom on the Move (SOTM) is reshaping global connectivity, enabling resilient communication across terrestrial and satellite domains. As integration with 5G and future 6G accelerates, challenges around spectrum coordination, regulation and cross border operation intensify. SOTM use across land, air and sea adds further complexity, compounded by limited standardised testing and validation. This panel examines regulatory, technical and validation needs, highlighting the importance of harmonised standards to support interoperable, scalable NTN and SOTM deployment.

The Rolls-Royce Rotary Piston Diesel Project 1964-1974 (Online)

In the 1960s, many rotary piston engine developments were launched based on the principles established by Felix Wankel and his colleagues at NSU. While most of these engines were petrol-fuelled, Rolls-Royce (Crewe) was uniquely commissioned in 1964 by the Military Vehicles and Engineering Establishment (MVEE) to develop a diesel variant for use as a high power-to-weight ratio engine in fighting vehicles. This presentation explores the engines design concept, technical challenges, extensive development programme, and the successes and setbacks that shaped the project. Although the programme ended in 1974, the engines had already demonstrated successful operation on testbeds and in a vehicle. The talk will also provide an update on the recommissioning of one of the surviving engines. The presenter briefly worked on the project in the 1970s and is now involved in restoring the engine at the Anson Engine Museum.
