Approach to Fusion Safety

Fusion is inherently safer than fission due to the absence of nuclear chain reactions. However, operating fusion power plants will not be risk free. There will still be numerous hazards that will need careful management in order to safely build, operate and ultimately decommission a fusion power plant. Ensuring a robust safety demonstration that covers all radiological and non-radiological hazards is therefore vitally important for the future permissioning and consenting of fusion power plants.

Talk: Empowering Homes with Solar Energy: Engineering and Economic Principles of Residential Grid-Connected PV Systems

As global energy frameworks shift toward decentralized renewables, engineering viable residential solar photovoltaic (PV) solutions requires a firm grasp of both technical design and market economics. This technical awareness talk introduces students and young engineers to the core engineering lifecycle of residential grid-connected solar PV systems. The session begins with the fundamental operating principles of solar cells and their seamless integration with the localized utility grid. Moving from theory to practical application, the presentation breaks down the engineering workflows for component selection, focusing heavily on matching PV array capacity with inverter specifications, calculating string sizing, and mitigating clipping or clipping losses. Finally, the discussion bridges engineering with finance, mapping out the economic drivers of solar adoption.
