Quantum: Game-changer or niche? (Online)

Quantum physics describes the behaviour of small particles such as atoms or photons. Recently technology has advanced to the point where this weird behaviour can be harnessed to do a wide range of things such as build powerful quantum computers, ultra-sensitive sensors, incredibly precise clocks and unhackable communications. This talk will provide an up-to-date view of quantum, with an honest appraisal of the outlook for this fascinating area with an emphasis on communications.

A Day in the Life of a RAIB Inspector

The talk will outline the role and workings of the RAIB, the UK's independent accident investigator for railways and tramways. It will describe a typical inspector�¢ï¿½ï¿½s working day to illustrate the range of work the Branch undertakes in order to understand the causes of accidents and to learn safety lessons from them.

Devil's Porridge

HM Factory Gretna transformed our region and the story told by the Devil's Porridge Museum sheds light on an overlooked aspect of the War. The talk will cover the use of cordite, the building of the factory and of Eastriggs and Gretna, the role of women in the production process and the government response to perceived excessive drinking by workers at the factory.
