IET Somerset and West Wiltshire Events

Present Around The World (PATW) is a competition open to applicants between 18 and 30 years old. Individual competitors give a ten minute presentation on a technology or engineering related subject of their choice in front of an audience and a panel of judges, followed by a five minute question and answer session. The spectacular success of AI has recently splashed across the news, social media, and look set to pervade everyday life for many. Research journals and conferences are replete with machine learning that involve ever greater varieties of neural architectures. Machines can synthesize speech, language, pictures to the point where serious ethical - even legal - issues arise. It is all very impressive, and on occasion perhaps unsettling. And yet AI struggles with art.

Electrification of aviation will be central to achieve ambitious environmental targets for the reduction of carbon emission, fuel burn and noise. A revolutionary concept is hydrogen-powered electric propulsion aircraft. A reliable high-power density and high efficiency superconducting DC distribution network will be a key enabling and transformative technology to achieve large-scale hydrogen-powered electric aircraft.
